Ce livre est un des premiers romans de Ken Folett et comme il l'explique dans la préface de sa réédition, il cherchait une voie originale mais n'a pas abouti. Ce livre n'est pas au niveau de ceux qui ont suivi.

A complex novel with a lot of characters in the early 19 century.The story is excellent, and well writtrn. There seems to be too parallel stories that tend to confuse the reader.

I really enjoyed this story - it was written in excellent english - clear and concise, no wasted words - a short book which moved along through the three cleverly interlinked stories of what took place one Saturday in 1977 (?). The characters are all so believable with a quirky twist on the gangland leader. Only 4 stars because I found the ending a bit of a 'damp squib' but pleasing enough. BUT I am now determined to tackle 'Pillars of the Earth' - previously far too big a book for my taste!!
